Ermanno Cristini’s exhibition Künstlerische Gymnastik (Artistic Gymnastics) at the Konzepthaus Laboratorium in Thun, Switzerland, in May-June 2023, has been further developed in this publication. The works on display, almost as if they were "semi-finished works", define themselves through their compromise with their surroundings, an “impure” space in which it has been  decided to leave everything that clutters as a memory or relic of the immediately preceding activity: fragments of installations, prototypes, temporarily stored objects. The result is an exhibition to be discovered, a forest to be explored in search of the pertinent, the irrelevant and the impertinent, a territory of possible paths where above all what Roland Barthes defines as “filth” or “negligence” hovers and which in the end is the punctum of the form, whose duration, if it is given, is given in a during. This book chooses not to set itself up as a catalogue but is content with a narrative through images, made in the immediacy of a story, that of the author, written with the spirit of direct testimony rather than of a document.

The Form of Lost Time borned by chance while losting time contemplating an armchair that referred to Proust, The Form of Lost Time are the product of a negligent activity, removed from the purpose, finalized solely in itself. The Form of Lost Time then became a series of works created here and there, directly or through an intermediary, which this limited edition booklet lovingly collects in the belief that lost time is always the only place for found time.

Cosimo Filippini has created a story in images, which together with the dialogue between the two editors gave life to this publication.

Started like a correspondence between Ermanno Cristini and Rossella Moratto, the resulting text has traveled the suspended time of an imaginary game of chess with no chance of solution. In the void of suspension have "happened" two exhibitions, one in Milan and one in Naples, which involved 63 artists, all of them commit to wasting time.

It was then born, with Giancarlo Norese, the idea of developing a book, initiated and never finished, but of which sare preserved some traces in this book.

Ermanno Cristini, Giving Form to Precariousness. In Design of the Unfinished. A New Way of Designing Leftovers Regeneration, Luciano Crespi (Ed.), 2021, Springer

 

The architectural “leftovers” that distinguish the current urban landscape also constitute a focus for artistic research, which is committed to measuring itself with the concepts of temporariness and precariousness, intended as constitutive elements of contemporary culture. Throughout the look for a new paradigm inspired by the ethics of the wanderer, the relationship with architectural “leftovers” can go beyond a static vision of their recovery as containers. In fact, we can look at them thinking about light, mobile and non-definitive interventions. The attempt is to “negotiate” with the space in order to “giving form to precariousness”. This way, the artistic interventions would not only rethink the status of work of art, but they would also redefine the identity of the places for cultural, nomadic and other new uses. The chapter analyses these issues by examining two case histories: the exhibitions of Dialogos project ( at AssabOne, a former printshop in Milan, and at VitrínaDeniska a former shop-window in Olomouc in the Czech Republic) and Sopra-Sotto (a former supermarket in Sesto Calende, in Italy).
